It is highly advisable not to download any remote desktop apps without understanding how they work. As fraudster can see whatever you are doing on the mobile, the moment you type the ID/password of the banking or UPI app, the fraudster simply notes it down. The moment you do any online transaction from UPI, Paytm, mobile banking, the credentials gets stolen. Through these apps, whatever you do your mobile screen automatically gets recorded on the PC of the fraud caller.
Once, you give the 9-digit or 10-digit code to the fraud customer care executive, the fraud caller will get to see your mobile screen on his PC and he can even record it. The so-called customer care executive to scam people will force you to download the AnyDesk or QuickSupport on your mobile phone After downloading any of the app, the fraud caller simply needs the remote access desk code and so will ask for it. So, how does fraudsters use AnyDesk or TeamViewer QuickSupport to scam people? When you contact the customer support of a service or someone gets in touch with you pretending to be from the customer care of any service. In case of AnyDesk or TeamViewer QuickSupport, very few non-IT people seems to know about it. For the layman, the situation is similar to how WhatsApp is being used to spread fake news due to lack of awareness. This means by using these tools or any remote device control app, you can work on your secured office computer from home. Like any remote device control app, AnyDesk or TeamViewer are tools for IT professionals to work on remote devices without being on-site.
In fact, apps like AnyDesk or TeamViewer QuickSupport are quite useful if used for the right purposes. Note that remote desktop apps like these are not any malware or fraud app.
Earlier this year, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and others have also issued similar advisories and warned citizens to no download any remote desktop sharing apps while interacting with anyone over the phone. This is not the first time that remote desktop apps like AnyDesk or TeamViewer QuickSupport have made headlines.
